By Leanne Hoagland-Smith Many public universities play the “Low Expectation Game” (see article “College ‘Low Expectations Game’ Cost Students, Parents & Taxpayers Thousands of Dollars”). As a student or a parent, you can avoid this game using the following tips: Tip #1 Register for 15 hours. To graduate in 4 years, not 5 not 6, requires a minimum of 15 hours per semester. If you are having problems securing 15 hours, ask the following question: Since I am earning a 4-year degree, how can I do that only taking 12 hours per semester? If the universitys designated person continues to refuse your request for 15 hours, ask for his or her supervisor. By being proactive at this time, will save you thousands of dollars. Tip #2 Secure Your BINGO sheet. When registering, secure a copy of all the required courses that you will need for your field of study. In some colleges or universities, this is called a BINGO sheet. If you are unsure, look through the college course catalog and see what courses are required for your different interests. Register for those shared required courses. Tip #3 Keep all Course Schedules and Offerings. Universities publish the schedule of the courses for the next semester. Do not discard these publications. With many courses being only offered during the spring or fall, this is the only tool that you have to learn when a specific course is offered or who teaches a course. Keeping these schedules becomes even more critical when you are planning your junior and senior years. Tip #4 Plan Your Courses Now. With the BINGO sheet in hand, begin to plan the courses that you will take during the next 3.5 years. This plan will change due to course changes, degree changes, etc. However, this 4-year plan provides you with the BIG picture and then allows you to begin to take small bites. Tip #5 Plan Your Weekly Schedule. Plan your weekly schedule including study time, research time, etc. For each 3-hour course, expect to spend 2 to 4 hours per week. Some courses such as English Literature may require substantial reading. If you are a slower reader allow for more reading time. If you are only going to school for 15 hours per week, there is plenty of time to study before, in between and after your classes. Many baby boomer graduates worked full time jobs while taking 15 to 18 hours. Tip #6 Focus on Your Graduation Goal Date. Every additional semester that you spend in college is costing you a minimum of $20,000 – $5,000 tuition and $15,000 in loss earnings. All of your actions should be directed to achieving your graduate goal date. Tip #7 Make Wise Choices. You, and only you, are responsible for the choices that you make. For parents, set the expectation that you expect your daughter or son to graduate in 4 years. Students accept that expectation and run with it. If you are having trouble with time management, goal planning and achievement, studying skills, course content, decision making or problem solving, make a wise choice and find some solutions. Remember, by graduating in 4 years, you have an edge over those students who chose to play the Low Expectation Game and you can start the life that you dreamed only 4 years earlier. By Jenny Mathers Question: What has calcium and weight loss got to do with tiny glands found inside your thyroid ? Give Up ? Well, apparently some think it has a lot to do with it. Quite recently you might have heard in the media about research that high calcium intakes promote fat burning. For a while now, those related to the dairy industry have been pushing the calcium and weight loss link.[2] The latest claim has been based on a study designed to examine the mechanism by which calcium may increase the fat burning effect of a meal. The study’s outcome suggests that these glands may play some role in the calcium and weight loss story. But there is a downside that some have forgotten to mention. This study was very small and used participants that were not overweight. The study focussed more on the way in which calcium may affect fat oxidation, rather than whether there is a causal link between calcium and weight loss. You can see the research abstract for yourself here. The research conducted jointly by Purdue University and Indiana University and funded by the Dairy Council, found that diets high in calcium from dairy sources increases the fat burning effect of a meal. They also found that an increase in a hormone called parathyroid hormone, known to regulate the levels of calcium and phosphorus in the body, decreases fat burning after a meal. Researchers prescribed the 10 subjects either a low or high dietary calcium intake over a 1 year period. The subjects were then assessed by measuring respiration and serum parathyroid hormone concentrations after they had consumed 2 isocaloric liquid meals containing 100 or 500 mg of calcium at the beginning of the study and after a year. The results of the study indicate that the group who received the high calcium intake had higher fat oxidation levels after a meal than did those in the group who received the low calcium meal. They also found that increases of parathyroid hormone were associated with decreases of fat oxidation after a meal. What does this new study tell us about calcium and weight loss? The study is small, it had a total of 10 participants. For it to be able to conclude that there is a link between calcium and weight loss, a larger study would need to be done. It does however, tell us that there may be a viable link between calcium and weight loss. Making Sense of The Confusion Let’s put this whole issue into perspective. There are two clear groups who have weighed into this issue. On one side are the food police activists who caution consumers against jumping on the “drink milk and lose weight” bandwagon. On the other side are manufacturers and dairy producer associations who have previously seen milk drinking rates decline, and want to get the message across that you need to drink more milk. Both sides are trying to get your attention as a milk consumer. There is a lot of evidence to suggest that high calcium intake is linked to weight loss.[4] However, some are suspicious that these studies have been funded by parties with a vested interest in the calcium and weight loss issue. [3] It is not always true that because a scientist has received funding from industry that their work will automatically be biased, but it should be made clear where the money has come from. If it does not matter where the money came from, then independent researchers should be able to get the same outcome. Having said this, why have other published studies found no evidence of a link between calcium and weight loss? Supporters of the calcium and weight loss link say that this is because drinking more milk may only help to lose weight, if the individual was calcium deficient in the first place.[4,5] The overwhelming truth is that, and even the 24/24 Milk website acknowledges this, is that the research is still emerging.[6] There is still more work to be done. However, in their favor, there is a lot of evidence to suggest that there is some kind of link between calcium and weight loss. So should we drink milk, or not to lose weight? Whatever the outcome of the dairy and weight loss research, dairy foods still provide your body with a myriad of nutrients important for good health. If you are not getting 3 servings of dairy each day, then on a general basis, you need to increase your dairy intake, but watch your calories. Include low fat dairy within a well balanced diet, calorie controlled diet. The 2005 Dietary Guidelines For Americans recommends that you get 3 cups of low-fat or fat-free milk or the same amount of low-fat yogurt and/or low-fat cheese on a daily basis. [1] This essentially is the general message being put across by the dairy industry at the moment.[6] If you consume whole milk products, most likely you will actually put on weight, because of the extra calories. What should we do before increasing our dairy intake? Talk to your doctor. Everyone is different, with differing needs. Translated “The Valley of Life, ” and named after a very impressive valley that splits the 100,000-acre unit of the Carson National Forest like a seam, the park was a gift to the public by the Pennzoil Company. Formerly, a part of the Vermejo Park, this donation was the single largest and most valuable donation of private land ever transferred to the Forest Service. Today, the Valle Vidal has become a sanctuary for outdoor recreation, hunting and fishing enthusiasts. It is special place, cherished by the locals and entrusted by all. Each year more than 3,000 Boy Scouts find high adventure in the alpine mountains. The Valle Vidal is home to many Game species, including Rocky Mountain elk, mule deer, black bear, and game fish, which include rainbow trout, brown trout, Rio Grande cutthroat trout and rainbow hybridization, known as the cut-bow. RIO GRANDE CUTTHROAT TROUT Rio Grande cutthroat are vibrantly colored averaging 7-12 inches. They are called cutthroats because they have blood red slashes below their head. They are native to Costilla Creek and a true fly-fishermans challenge to catch. The Rio Grande cutthroat trout is New Mexicos official state fish. CAMPING Your best option is to stay at the McCrystal Creek campground located off Forest Rd. 1950, 30 miles south of Amalia. The 60-site campground is set at an elevation of 8,100 feet, and is the model Forest Service campground. The views are spectacular, overlooking 9,000 foot peaks and a pine outlined meadows. Campsites have fire rings, picnic tables and lots of space. Campers often have their horses tied to surrounding trees as they rest from long treks through the mountains and valleys. The second option is to stay in the Cimarron campground, which has 32 sites, located via Forest Rd. 1950 to Forest Rd. 1910, which ends in camp. Reservations are not required, but may be made by contacting the Questa Ranger District, (505) 586-0520. WHERE TO FISH Shuree Ponds: Located off Forest Rd. 1950, Shuree Ponds are located right in the middle of the Valle Vidal. The two ponds are the only bodies of water that hold catch-able game fish. Fishermen are limited to 2 trout, at least 15 inches long and must also obey the artificial flies or lures with single, barbless hooks regulation that is enforced throughout the Valle Vidal. The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish stocks 12-16 inch rainbows regularly during the summer. Of the two ponds, the smaller one is reserved for kids age 12 and under and can be easily fished from the banks. The second pond is much larger, approximately 5 acres, and is more commonly fished using a float tube. Costilla Creek: With Rio Grande Cutthroats averaging 8-12 inches, this river is the main fishery and winds through wide mountain meadows. Cast dry flies upstream to the heads and tails of pools. Try flipping your fly beneath the edges of the bank and allow you fly to float downstream. Comanche Creek: One of the branches off Costilla Creek, fishing techniques are similar to those used in Costilla Creek. Try casting 5 to 10 yard off the bank into the far bank and look for shaded still pools. Ponil Creek: The creek feeds and relives the Shuree Ponds. Trout frequently hang out in the water both above and below the ponds. REGULATIONS The Valle Vidal is open for fishing July 1 through December 31. Spring Closure in the west side of the Valle Vidal Unit is from May 1, – June 30, Winter Closure on the East side of Valle Vidal is from January 1, – March 31st. Beginning 2.4 miles downstream at Latir Creek, and throughout the Valle Vidal Unit, all streams and ponds are subject to special fishing regulations. By Annie Kaszina Caution is a word with a fine old-fashioned ring. The dictionary definition I have in front of me reads: “attention to safety, prudence, carefulness”. It’s a term that seems to have been relegated to financial affairs. It smacks of an earlier time when the idea was to avoid debt at all costs. These days caution sounds curiously out of place where interpersonal relationships are concerned. (Although there is a good case for asking yourself where the sense is in that.) Certainly, caution is not a quality that is characteristic of abused women, aka ‘women who love too much’. Abused women may be inclined to place unconditional trust in unsuitable parties, and they may be unusually fearful and distrustful. (Sadly, these attitudes are not necessarily mutually exclusive.) Recurrent verbal abuse will drown out the voice of their intuition, until they come to rely on the apparent certainties of a partner, or others, with strong opinions about everything. (How many abusive men do you know who don’t think their opinion is law?) One thing is sure, abused women are rarely emotionally cautious; possibly because they set so little store by themselves. They have precious little attention left to give to their emotional safety. They rarely invest their emotional wealth prudently and they are, all too often, careless of their personal well-being. Their focus is always on appeasing an increasingly difficult partner who, vampire-like, consumes every drop of their concern and energy. Nor is it any wonder that they don’t expend their emotional resources cautiously since their partner consistently berates them for not showing enough love or understanding. Sadly it is not only with a partner or prospective partner that they need to exercise emotional caution. Within a relatively short time I’ve heard several accounts of women who have experienced abusive treatment from their counsellor or psychotherapist. In some cases of couples’ counselling, the counsellor was swayed by the charm and credibility of the abuser, to blame the victim for the problems in the relationship. In one case a male psychotherapist spent some weeks building a foundation of trust with his female client and then, slowly and systematically, he started ‘grooming’ her to satisfy his own sexual needs. Counsellors and therapists are, in the end, no better and no worse than anyone else. Professional competence, in whatever field, is one thing. Integrity and refusal to take advantage of the vulnerable clearly should be part of it. But they may not be. It depends on the values of the individual. (The male therapist mentioned above was apparently a good therapist – when he confined himself to doing the job he was paid to do.) It comes down to a Catch 22 situation. When we are at our most vulnerable, we are most likely to trust, more or less blindly, someone who we come to believe is better equipped to manage our situation than we are. Yet that is precisely the time when we are most likely to attract someone who will exploit and abuse our trust. It goes without saying that we are most vulnerable when the voice of intuition has been more or less silenced by distress. And that is where caution comes in. The women mentioned above, whose trust was abused by the professionals allegedly there to support them, were understandably – slow to make sense of what was happening. They were also fearful of walking away from someone they believed they needed in order to cope. The question they asked themselves was: “What will happen to me if I lose this support?” It is a question that serves only to disempower people further. The truth is that they would have coped. Our fear grossly underestimates our resources. Our resources, once we confront issues, end up amazing us. Better questions to ask, might be based on the components of caution: “Is this person’s attention truly focused on my physical and emotional safety?” “Is their advice prudent, that is to say careful to avoid consequences for me that I would find undesirable?” “Is this person careful of my feelings?” If the answer to any of these questions is “No”, then why would you trust the person? What will happen if you put yourself in their hands? Nor is it enough to ask and answer these questions just once. Trust, including self-trust, has to be built incrementally. Until your intuition is back in action working overtime on your behalf and that will happen in time the counsel of caution may well be the most valuable counsel you’re likely to hear. By Paula McCoach You are probably thinking that making your own Civil War Uniforms Slouch hat for almost nothing is impossible. But, you are wrong. It is very possible. And easy. 1. Frequent flea markets, thrift stores, antique shops, yard sales and look for a felt hat. They are great places to find a hat that someone wants to get rid of and for a cheap price! I found an unbelievable slouch hat at our local church thrift shop for about 25 cents. 2. If it is good quality felt, wet it and brush it down with a hairbrush to get the shape you want. 3. Stuff it with old towels to get it to a neutral shape. 4. Let it sit for a day or two and take the towels out and decide what type of shape you want to make it. 5. Look at original photos and decide which hat you want to duplicate. 6. Put a band on it or a hat cord. You may need to remove the modern band and put a band on made from a natural material like silk not synthetic. 7. If it is not trimmed in some type of ribbon you can put that on it but it is not necessary. Keep your eye out for real old ribbon to use on your hat. Check out sewing baskets in antique stores. 8. To find out if it is old, take a few strands out of the ribbon and put a match to it. If it does not ball up and burns clean, it is probably a natural material. If it balls up and smokes, than it is probably a synthetic material. 9. Keep the ribbons a solid color black, brown, gray not anything with stripes. 10.You can put a contrasting color band on your hat 11. Blend and use the same color ribbon as the hat. 12. Feathers can be added although that is not my style. 13. I personally do not like all the doo dads – the plain and generic look is the most authentic. 14. Good colors would be black, brown, and gray. 15.Your best bet is to look at original photos and train your eye to spot a hat that you could duplicate for your Civil War Uniform impression. Making your own Civil War Slouch hat may cost you about $10. The last time I checked the prices of slouch hats at the sutlers, slouch hats were selling for about $110! So, save yourself some serious money and make your own Civil War slouch hat. You will get exactly the hat you want! Get over it, as I have once said, If you are worried about losing your tackle, you should not be out fishing or stop buying those expensive lures and accessories to begin with. There are a few basic rules when it comes to the size of string, hooks, lures and other parts of your tackle. To begin with, chose a string size depending upon where youre going to be lookin for those fish, the type of fish youre lookin for and the size of your rod and reel youre using. If youre in fishing freshwater, you really neednt go bigger than 12 pound test, 14 if youre gonna fish in heavy cover. The average size string used is 6 or 8 pound test. Thats on a six and a half foot rod with a 10 pound test reel. 10 pound string is a well diversely sized string. The 10 lb string can stand up to average fighting in the cover and still be light enough to remain hidden and give the lure a realistic movement. Lighter string is used more for smaller sized species of fish. Leaders in general should be 10 or 12 pound test and usually heavier than your main line. They should also be and average length of 18 to 24 inches long and a color that will blend in or disappear. Longer leaders may be needed for trolling, rivers and shore fishing. Weighted leaders should be 14 to 20 pound monofilament, preferably green. When it comes to the color of lures, all you really need to remember is light, dark and florescent. The colors you chose depend on the natural colors of the waters youre fishin and the weather. Sometimes different colors than what the fish usually see, work better. The same can also be said about the shape of lures used. Colors fade to gray the deeper they go. This is where florescent lures come into play. They retain more of their color than regular colored lures. Yellow (light) and Chartreuse (dark) are the most effective colors to use. Ive found that lighter colors, generally are more visible during high light conditions and dark colors work better in low light conditions. The darker colors will stand out more in what little light there is. The actual color of the lure you chose directly depends upon the natural colors of the types of food chain present in your fishing area at that time or all of the time. Go to the local tackle shop and listen or just ask the clerk about the colors of the frogs, crawdads, baby gills, shads, worms and lizards. Or look at the racks and what ever colors have the least amount in stock, will be the colors you will want to use in that area. Do some sight fishing to find out first hand, this is also a great way to gain experience and learn a thing or three about your fishing spot. As for the angler, colors help us to see the lure, which is also important. Any abrupt disappearances are easily detected, light colors help us to keep track of the lure so we can watch for a strike and during high light conditions fish can see them better. Hook size depends on the size of your bait. Obviously the bigger the worm or creature you use, the bigger the hook you will need. The average rig has a 1/0 offset hook and a six to ten inch plastic lure. This combination will draw out some good sized fish used with all the possible soft-bait rigging methods. As far as weightless and live bait rigs, the #6 bait-holder hook is the best choice. Large bass and smaller bluegill alike will get hooked on that one. The size of barrel swivels depends on the angler and whether you are fishing for Bluefish in the Atlantic or Bluegill in the Mid-west. I prefer to use the smallest barrel possible, because its still strong enough to bring up a two foot catfish as well as a good four or five pound Large-mouth bass. Structure and hang-ups can also help determine the size selection of your terminal tackle. You want something strong enough to handle a good fight in the weeds yet still break away easily when you get hung up in the weeds and brush. Speaking of getting hung-up, never pull back on the rod to free a snagged rig. This can either break your rod or cause the lure to come flying at you or your buddy. This can lead very serious injuries. When trying to free a hung-up rig, pull on the line either down by the reel or out in front of the rod. The lure may still fly out, so yell contact, turn your head prepare for the attack. Or try to reach the hag-up and free the rig manually. This is the safest way to free a hang-up.
